Built Around Timeless Gatherings
Mahjong has always been more than a game.
Tile & Tea Table was founded by a group of Asian American women where Mahjong has been woven into childhood memories, moments spent around the table with their own children, stories shared across generations, spirited play, and moments of connection that became lasting memories.
As we introduced new friends to the game and discovered American Mahjong, we found ourselves searching for sets beautiful and intentional as the gatherings they inspire. We wanted a set that honored tradition, reflected modern design, and allowed hosts and players the freedom to play their way.
From this, Tile & Tea Table emerged as thoughtfully designed tile collections that blend artistry and culture, elegant enough for a beautifully set table and versatile for both Chinese and American Mahjong.
Rooted in Tradition. Designed for Today.
We wanted our tiles to feel unmistakably Mahjong—so we started with the integrity of the original designs. The familiar symbols, proportions, and visual language remain at the heart of each tile, while playful, modern artwork brings a fresh perspective to the game.
Rather than reinventing Mahjong, we thoughtfully reimagined it. Our original graphics take the place of traditional imagery while staying true to the spirit and structure of the tiles we all know and love.
And because we believe Mahjong should be enjoyed in more ways than one, our sets are designed for both American and Chinese Mahjong, with 10 Jokers and 6 Blanks to accommodate play across both traditions.
Familiar at first glance. Fresh when you look a little closer.
Meet Julie Kavanagh: Where Art Meets Mahjong
Tiles in the Signature Pearl Collection began as an original hand-drawn illustration by Julie Kavanagh who brings a fine artist's perspective, transforming a traditional Mahjong set into something refined and expressive. Julie's art has been exhibited in Florence, London, and various cities in the US. Her work can be found in both domestic and international collections. In 2023 her art was featured at de Young Open at de Young Fine Art Museum, San Francisco.
Handwritten Calligraphy Rooted in Heritage
Tiles in the Signature Pearl Collection features Chinese characters reproduced from original handwritten calligraphy by Vivian Yeh. Inspired by growing up in San Francisco's Chinatown and a lifetime immersed in Chinese cultural arts, including calligraphy, folk dance, poetry, and music, her work brings to life a connection to heritage, language, and tradition.
